The collection of electronics that supplies power to the motor is called the motor amplifier (or driver). The way this works for AC motors is quite different than for direct-current (DC) motors. The different types of DC motors also require different types of amplifiers, so for simplicity, our discussion here will be limited to the driving of PMDC motors.

To propel most mechanical loads, a motor requires significant electrical power. A computer (typically a single-board computer) is used to control the motor, but it can supply only milliwatts of power, so we will need a motor amplifier.
