A digital communication protocol is a set of rules used by multiple devices to communicate. Many aspects of communication might be specified by a protocol, including how channel encoding and decoding should work, how channel modulation and demodulation should work, and the electrical characteristics that a channel should have. Protocols should be comprehensive enough that devices following all the rules of the protocol can communicate with other devices doing the same. Some communication protocols are proprietary and are used only by their owners. However, many protocols are openly published to encourage multiple organizations to design devices that can communicate.
